A coastal escape from mainland Athens, based on June ’23.
Logistics
GETTING THERE:
Right so: if you are roadtripping, you can drive to the Port of Kosta (3 hours), park the car there and catch a €1.50 5min boat ride across to Spetses. Or, since it is a no-car island, you can catch a ferry from Athens that takes between 2-3.5 hours, depending on the stops.
GETTING AROUND:
Spetses is a no-car island, so your modes of transport consist of (quad)bikes, horse-drawn carriages (for real) and water taxis, along with very few taxis.
Attractions
Alfi’s
If you think its a signal of quality: their pistachio flavour is not green. Irrespective, their gelato was the best on the island – they also make good coffees and, if you want to sit, they have beautiful views of the coastal road.
Gironostimes
Of all the gyros and souvlakia I had, Gironostimes was the most delicious (as the name translates). For a sit down meal, their seating in the courtyard is quite nice and has a lovely buzz.
Bikini Cocktails & Snacks
We were lucky enough to attend a cocktail function on the upstairs terrace; the views over the water and the niceeee cocktails make it a great spot for sundowners. If you grab a bite to eat from one of its neighbouring restaurants, and are in the mood to bar hop, the strip is full if vibey spots, including Bikini’s ground floor (on the water).
Vrelos
I love beach hopping and discovering ‘unnamed’ bays to swim in (hence recommending a quadbike rental). But here are a few of the local favourites (and my favourites) This beach was in a cove of trees, and had a small beach bar. Beautiful waters and umbrellas available.
Zogeria Beach
We got here via boat (an awesome experience that I would recommend to anyone) and even enjoyed some food at the taverna. It’s beautiful, but especially convenient for families (imo).
Agioi Anargyroi
This was the first beach I visited because I heard about Bekiri’s cave. I’ll say that the cave itself (easily accessed on foot) it a bit odd, but the pebble beach was absolutely stunning (reminded me of Skopelos) with lots of greenery and blue waters. To rent an umbrella and set of chairs was around €15 for the day, but like every other beach, you can park your towels on the sand/stones.
Tiramisu
We ended up here in the late afternoon on the way back into the main town – it’s a great place to grab a (good) coffee while plunging into the water. The cute umbrellas also give a 1950’s touch and the store also makes pastries (that I did not try).
Agios Mamas
If you’re staying in Spetses, this beach is especially convenient as it’s on the main road (opposite Dodonis ice cream). The dock like beach has chairs to rent and the water is lovely to swim in.
Spetses Moto Rent (Kokoris Konstantinos)
Go to the motor rental place by Agios Mamas beach / after Dodonis ice cream. It’s €35 for the day (cheaper than the rest) and good bikes available.
Poseidonion Grand Hotel
Even if you opt to stay at another (more affordable) place, this historic hotel has a lovely terrace that overlooks the water – I’d suggest looking around and maybe grabbing a coffee on their terrace.
